Job Description

A well-established Houston-area manufacturing company is seeking a Buyer to join the team. This is an on-site role supporting the Procurement department in a stable manufacturing environment. The Buyer is responsible for purchasing materials, supplies, and services at the most favorable terms, securing material availability in alignment with production requirements, and managing supplier relationships to drive optimal cost, quality, and delivery performance.

Responsibilities:
  • Identify, evaluate, and develop suppliers to ensure optimal cost, quality, delivery, and risk performance in alignment with the organization's sourcing strategy.
  • Place and communicate material requirements via purchase orders to suppliers; handle deviations within placed purchase orders, secure on-time delivery, and follow up on delayed orders.
  • Receive and register order confirmations from suppliers; handle and communicate deviations.
  • Purchase items for stock and/or project orders including min/max settlement.
  • Handle deviations in supplier invoices and potentially authorize supplier payment.
  • Maintain accurate ERP system data including lead times, purchase costs, and standard costs.
  • Establish material contracts consistent with cost, inventory, and quality requirements.
  • Suggest recommendations for supply chain demand and implementation.
  • Monitor department KPIs and drive continuous improvement in supplier lead times, on-time delivery, inventory targets, and PPV results and savings.
  • Update open orders accurately and timely.
  • Focus and follow up on results related to strategic goals: DOT, QA, and cost.
  • Focus and follow up on daily results related to the defined shared goals for purchasing (quality, delivery, service, and total cost).
  • Execute supplier qualification procedures; select competitive suppliers based on quality, delivery, service, and total cost objectives.
  • Support the development and negotiation of long-term contracts and agreements.
  • Proactively manage supplier relationships to ensure on-time delivery; anticipate and identify problems with suppliers, assist in developing alternative solutions, and communicate major problems to management.
  • Places orders for materials, equipment, or services involving high financial risk.
  • Actively seek alternative processes, suppliers, and materials to minimize cost while ensuring delivery and quality requirements are met.
  • Work with other Buyers, suppliers, or Finance to correct purchase order/receipt discrepancies and resolve invoice issues.
  • Manage purchasing database information in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Support supply chain process with idea generation.
  • Assist in developing forecasts and schedules for new products or S&OP meetings in collaboration with Sales.
  • Assist in commercial development activities, including participating in research of materials for new products.
  • Participate in lean activities and continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
  • Assist in training new Buyers as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Materials Management, Supply Chain Management, or related field required
  • 2-4 years of experience in supply chain planning or materials management in a manufacturing environment
  • Extensive experience utilizing an MRP system
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with strong Excel skills
  • Able to assist in driving continuous improvement initiatives
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • APICS CPIM certification preferred
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt preferred
