Job Description

A fast-growing transport company is seeking a Head of Safety to lead safety, compliance, and risk management across its freight operations. The ideal candidate is an experienced transportation safety leader with strong knowledge of trucking regulations, fleet operations, and regulatory compliance. Working collaboratively, the new leader will strengthen operational safety and reduce risk by developing scalable safety programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and leading audit readiness efforts while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Location: Raleigh, NC
Type of Position: Direct Hire

Responsibilities: 
  • Strategy & Leadership
    • Lead the Safety team, defining strategy, structure, and priorities.
    • Build and scale Safety processes, policies, and governance.
    • Develop and track key metrics (KPIs/KRIs) for the area.
    • Manage and develop the team, ensuring high performance.
    • Nurture a culture of Safety first for the company guaranteeing high level of compliance with FMCSA / DOT regulations.
  • Regulatory Compliance (US Trucking)
    • Ensure compliance with U.S. transportation regulations (DOT, FMCSA, among others).
    • Act as the main point of contact for regulatory matters and external stakeholders.
    • Ensure readiness for audits and regulatory inspections.
    • Implement and maintain up-to-date compliance policies and controls.
  • Safety & Operations
    • Ensure customers and operations follow safety and traffic regulations.
    • Drive incident prevention and promote best practices in safety.
    • Monitor safety metrics and continuously improve performance.
    • Partner closely with Operations to ensure safe and efficient execution.
  • Risk Management
    • Identify, assess, and mitigate operational, regulatory, and reputational risks.
    • Develop risk management frameworks and processes.
    • Support business decision-making with a risk-based perspective.
    • Implement internal controls and mitigation plans.
  • Audit & Incidents
    • Lead internal and external audits.
    • Manage critical incidents, including investigation and action plans.
    • Ensure proper documentation, root cause analysis, and implementation of improvements.
    • Establish crisis management processes when needed.
  • Culture & Influence
    • Foster a strong culture of safety and compliance across the organization.
    • Influence stakeholders across different levels and functions.
    • Partner closely with Internal Operations.
    • Ensure Risk & Compliance acts as a business enabler, not a blocker.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Business, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with trucking operations
  • Managed fleet of 200+ trucks
  • Knowledge of U.S. transportation regulations (e.g., DOT, FMCSA)
  • Strong analytical skills with data-driven decision-making
  • Experience managing operational risks in fast-paced environments
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience with safety monitoring and telematics tools
  • Certifications in Risk, Compliance, or Safety are a plus
  • FMCSA audit experience preferred
  • Dealt with insurance carriers preferred
  • Built safety programs from scratch preferred
