Job Description

A leading engineering consulting firm is seeking a Sample Prep Technician to prepare and process core samples for testing. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, precise, and experienced in handling fragile materials. Working in a laboratory setting, the successful candidate will ensure quality control by maintaining accurate inventory records, following testing protocols, and handling samples with care while supporting the efficiency and accuracy of testing procedures.

Location: Houston, TX 77043
Type of Position: Temp-to-Hire

Responsibilities:
  • Receive, organize, and clean core samples upon arrival.
  • Prepare samples by cutting, drilling, and assembling them according to testing requirements.
  • Work with the team to piece samples together accurately, similar to a jigsaw puzzle.
  • Acquire samples from core sections per the provided sample sheet.
  • Measure and identify sample types required for specific tests.
  • Label, organize, and bag samples while maintaining detailed inventory records in a spreadsheet.
  • Ensure proper dimensions, flatness, and cleanliness of samples before testing.
  • Verify the accuracy of acquired samples and maintain a high level of precision.
  • Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of laboratory machinery.
  • Handle samples with care, especially fragile rock formations, to prevent breakage.
  • Adapt drilling and cutting techniques depending on the type of rock material (e.g., Texas vs. New Mexico samples).
  • Regularly lift and transport heavy samples (50 lbs. or more) unassisted.
  • Work independently while following established procedures and guidelines.

Requirements:
  • No prior experience in sample preparation is required; training will be provided
  • Experience using measurement tools, hand tools, or cutting equipment is a plus
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work in a structured environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory setting with natural rock materials
  • Ability to adapt to different sample conditions and problem-solve as needed
  • Willingness to learn and work autonomously as part of a team
