Job Description

A fast-growing manufacturer of radical, meticulously-engineered gear is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer responsible for the mechanical development and testing of new products in its exciting new line. The ideal candidate has a strong technical & mechanical aptitude and is well-versed in design software. Working in a team, the new member will positively impact the business by effectively collaborating and implementing processes with the highest level of creativity & accuracy while maintaining cost-efficiency and quality standards.

Location: San Francisco, CA
Type of Position: Direct Hire

Responsibilities: 
  • Establish design requirements; market research for new product definition; ideation of new product concepts.
  • Partner with the Industrial Design team on ID directions and implement them in a parametric CAD stack.
  • Formulate and document test procedures for products in development.
  • Responsible for the management and organization of proto and EVT builds.
  • Build proficiency in Onshape and establish a clear organizational structure for new and old CAD.
  • Guide outsourced CAD resources in China for latter stage design.

Requirements:
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or comparable degree or experience
  • 3+ years of post-grad work experience doing some form of mechanical design; able to travel to China or other parts of Asia to visit suppliers 1-3 times per year
  • Possess hustle, humility, and a technical growth mindset; want to grow tremendously as an engineer by designing & shipping many products; excited about technical problems and are curious about new technical topics
  • Strong technical aptitude; lean into technical challenges and are able and excited to go deep on a technical topic to build your knowledge
  • Experience owning mechanical parts and assemblies from prototyping through mass production for high volume products that have successfully shipped to customers
  • Highly effective at creating and maintaining complex 3D models in any major 3D CAD system; bonus points for direct Onshape experience (we recently transitioned from Solidworks to Onshape)
  • Strong desire and inclination toward hands-on prototyping; love to create actual functioning prototypes and products, not just design them virtually
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, both hands-on and theoretical; worked extensively with moving parts and mechanisms
  • Deep familiarity with a few (or all) of the following manufacturing processes: CNC milling, die casting, injection molding, stamping, extrusion, and assembly
  • Familiarity with various surface finishes: anodization, powder coating, painting, plating; familiarity with basic materials properties: aluminum alloys, steels, rubbers, plastics
  • Familiarity with phase-gates manufacturing system (Proto, EVT, DVT, PVT, Mass Production); previous travel to China and vendor management - experience bringing up a manufacturing line and problem solving in-person from EVT through MP
  • Working knowledge of supply chain structure and ability to navigate communication at various levels of the supply chain
