Job Description
A rapidly growing engineering and design firm specializing in power distribution systems for the chemical processing industry is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to produce electrical bid/construction drawings for field contractors and vendors. The ideal candidate is an electrical design expert with knowledge of power system design, power distribution equipment, and protective relaying. Working closely with electrical designers, the new team member will ensure high-quality designs and a diversified portfolio by developing a system architecture in accordance with technical requirements & safety standards.

Responsibilities:
- Work closely with electrical designers to produce electrical bid/construction drawings for field contractors and vendors. Develop scopes of work for field contractors and electrical testing contractors.
- Develop RFQs / requests for proposal for electrical equipment such as power distribution equipment, switchgear, motor controls centers, power distribution centers, protective relays, power transformers, UPS system and control panels.
- Review and red-line in-house and vendor electrical drawings, including one-lines, switchgear control schematics, MCC drawings, equipment interconnect diagrams, bill of materials, equipment layouts, etc.
- Create and review electrical system designs, including power generation, utility inter-ties, power distribution, motor/plant logic, control systems, emergency power, and safety shutdown systems.
- Prepare technical bids and/or proposal evaluations and recommendations.
- Provide technical assistance in the form of written reports, consultation, research, NEC interpretations, and recommendations.
- Prepare detailed short circuit, motor starting, load shedding, and relay coordination studies.
- Work with field contractors during construction, Testing & start-up. Supervise, inspect, and provide support as required.
- Perform power calculations based on customers’ existing loads or new loads to correctly size power distribution equipment, including switchgear, panelboards, transformers, motor control systems, and conductors.
- Develop switching operations on electrical power distribution systems.
- Program and configure protection and control relays. (i.e., feeder, transformer, and motor protection relays).
- Follow standards and guidelines for electrical design as provided by the company, clients, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and the NESC.
Requirements:
- BS Degree, Electrical Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university
- Professional Engineering license in Texas; licensing is preferred, but not required
- Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience described below
- Experience specifying electrical equipment, including MV & LV switchgear, MCCs, and PDC/PCR/EEC buildings
- Experience with power system design, power distribution equipment, and protective relaying from 120V to 15KV and up to 30MVA
- Experience designing, engineering & specifying systems, equipment and power control buildings typically used in facilities in petrochemical plants, power plants, processing plants, petrochemical terminals, and pump stations
- Broad experience with replacement/improvement projects, including upgrade and expansion projects
- Knowledge of applicable codes, government regulations, and standards pertaining to electrical systems such as NFPA, NEC, and IEEE
- Self-motivated with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel required
- Ability to interface effectively with a wide range of technical, analytical, and management personnel
- Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience using SKM and/or ETAP to design, modify, and analyze power distribution systems is a definite plus.
- Experience in electrical modeling programs (SKM, ETAP, etc.) to conduct Protective Relay Coordination studies, Load Flow studies, Arc Flash studies, and Fault Analysis
- Experience Configuring and Programming Protective Relays. (i.e., Feeder, Transformer, and Motor Protection Relays)
- Good Knowledge of IEEE Standards especially STD 141 “Red” Book and STD 399 “Brown Book” is a plus
- Experience with both green grass and brown grass projects, including upgrade and expansion projects
- Experience using AutoCAD to make revisions/modifications to electrical drawings
