Job Description

A nationally recognized litigation company is looking for an experienced Controller to oversee and manage its financial and accounting operations. The ideal candidate possesses a comprehensive knowledge of accounting and financial planning & analysis, along with exceptional leadership and management abilities. Working cross-functionally, the new leader will drive operational efficiency and continued growth by improving processes and results while maintaining compliance with accounting policies and procedures.

Location: Houston, TX
Type of Position: Direct Hire

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implement a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk and ensure compliance with those policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the preparation and publication of periodic financial reports; ensure that the reported results comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Recommend, maintain, and regularly publish benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Produce the annual budget and financial and cash forecasts; report significant budget differences to management and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Provide financial analysis, with emphasis on pricing decisions, and project profitability.
  • Provide guidance to sales and operations on actions needed to improve profitability.
  • Work with auditors, tax advisors, insurance providers, and other external parties to provide needed information and manage compliance processes.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining bank relationships. Work with banks on establishing and improving credit facilities (Line of Credit).
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
  • Supervisory:
  • Directly supervise 3-5 employees in the Finance and Payroll Departments.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Oversee the operations of the Finance Department, which include general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and cash management. Oversee training programs and identify training needs.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required
  • Ten years or more of related experience required
  • Accounting and Financial Planning/Reporting experience required
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred
  • Strong leadership skills with excellent management and supervisory skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in accounting software, preferably Intaact and PlanGuru
  • Familiar with SaaS pricing models, e.g., volume-based flat fees and monthly flat fees
  • Familiar with medium-sized business principles, including banking, benefits, systems, insurance, and financial planning and reporting
  • Knowledge of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to excel in a detail-oriented, deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining constant level of high quality
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
