Job Description

A rapidly growing construction supply company is seeking an Estimator to join the team. This individual will serve as the company's subject matter expert for estimating water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage projects, supporting bid strategy and helping establish estimating best practices as the company continues to expand. The Estimator will play a critical role in the company's continued success and will have the opportunity to influence future estimating processes and potentially grow into a leadership position.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for underground utility construction projects involving water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems.
  • Review project plans, specifications, contracts, and bid documents to identify project scope, risks, and opportunities.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for underground utility projects.
  • Develop material pricing, labor estimates, equipment costs, and production assumptions.
  • Prepare conceptual, budgetary, and final project estimates.
  • Develop value engineering recommendations and alternate pricing when appropriate.
  • Participate in bid review meetings and present estimate assumptions to leadership.
  • Support project turnover by ensuring estimating assumptions and scope are clearly communicated to operations.
  • Monitor bidding platforms including CivCast, Construction Connect, and similar sites for upcoming opportunities.
  • Identify potential project opportunities and communicate them to internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain contractor lists to support the sales team and future business development efforts.
  • Solicit pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals for completeness, competitiveness, and scope coverage.
  • Coordinate with procurement to ensure pricing aligns with preferred vendors and sourcing strategies.
  • Identify scope gaps, overlaps, and potential project risks before bid submission.
  • Partner closely with operations, procurement, project management, and business development throughout the preconstruction process.
  • Provide estimating support for change orders, cost forecasting, and project revisions as needed.
  • Help establish estimating standards, templates, and best practices as the estimating function continues to grow.
  • Serve as a technical resource for team members by sharing underground utility estimating knowledge and industry expertise.

Requirements:
  • 3+ years of estimating experience within underground utility construction (water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, or similar infrastructure)
  • Hands-on experience preparing quantity takeoffs and developing estimates for underground utility projects is required
  • Experience reviewing civil plans, specifications, and construction documents
  • Strong understanding of underground utility construction methods, materials, production rates, and cost drivers
  • Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates while meeting aggressive bid deadlines
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferred; equivalent industry experience will also be considered
  • Bilingual Spanish is preferred but not required
